Techie Tuesday 2

Welcome to week 2 of Techie Tuesday! I hope you tried some of the apps I have reviewed before.

Today I want to talk about a program that has been a game changer for how I keep track of my studio. It is not an app, but a website. MyMusicStaff.com is a great way to keep track of students, their info, payments, business expenses, lending library and so many other things. It has a monthly subscription fee, but it is the same price no matter the size, which is $12.95/month. At first I wasn’t sure about subscribing to it since I have such a small studio, but it has made the business side of things so much easier.

I have it set up to automatically send out invoices each month to my students’ parents. I love that I don’t have to personally make each invoice. During the month if I need to add an expense to a student (such as a new book) I can quickly open the website on my phone and add it in no time. Also, I can quickly add a payment as soon as I receive it.

One feature I think would be great for other teachers is the way to keep track of notes during the lesson and then send them to the student and parent. I have tried it a few times but I have not had success with them actually looking at the notes at home. For now I will stick with my written lesson notes.

Another thing I wish the parents in my studio would use is their online account. They are able to log on and view student lesson info, account owing info, and signing up for make up lessons. I am able to see when they last logged on, and most of them have only logged on once when I sent them their login info. I’m hoping through the next year to get my parents to sign up for make up lessons online rather than contacting me.

There are many other features that I haven’t explored yet, such as online payments, lending library tracker, mileage, and all of the studio report options.

I highly recommend looking into MyMusicStaff.com to help organize your studio!

Techie Tuesday 1

Welcome to the 1st of the new Techie Tuesday Series. During this series I will share reviews of all things Tech. Most of the time will be spent on Android Apps as I feel they are sorely undervalued. All opinions are my own and I have not received anything for giving them.

Staff Wars ($.99) ✰✰✰✰✰

This is a fun way for students to learn the notes on the staff. You can chose whether you want to do treble, alto, or bass clefs. A note starts at the right hand side of the screen and moves toward the left. You must play the correct note which then blows the note up. One of the nice things about it is that you can adjust the pitch if your instrument is sharp or flat. I like this for my violin students especially as it makes them think quickly and they can see right away whether they are in tune or not.

Flashnote Derby ($2.99) ✰✰✰✰✰

A note identification app. In this app a “flashcard” with a note is shown and then the note name must be chosen. If you chose correctly your horse moves ahead, if incorrect it falls behind. All of my students that have used this app have loved it! I love that I can chose what notes I want my students to work on.

Race against the fire. Notes on a staff move from right to left across the screen. If they reach the fire then they burn and the fire moves closer to the right. You can chose if the you identify them on a keyboard, by letter name, or solfege with a fixed Do. In the paid version you have more control over which notes are used, including choosing which key signature. I like that you can control the speed that the notes move so that for students just starting they can fill accomplishment before moving it faster.

What I’ve Been Doing

I’ve been pretty busy the last few months. Here’s an update on what I’ve been doing.

Personal Life 20160720_150036

I had a baby last November. He is such a sweet baby, but having a baby and a 3 year old takes a lot of time and energy. I’m finally starting to feel that we are settling in to being a family of 4 though.

I’m excited that this fall me and the boys will be attending a music class once a week! We did a trial one a couple months ago and it was so much fun.

Music Life

I’ve been working on Certifying with MTNA on both the violin and piano. I submitted my projects last month, and look forward to becoming a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). The projects were very time consuming, but I learned so much doing them. Over the next few weeks I will share some of the projects.

I am currently on the Utah Music Teachers Association Board as the UMTA Concerto Competition Chair (Instrumental). I am also on my local chapter (Nebo) board as well over the Annual Master Class. Being active in the association has taught me so many things and introduced me to so many wonderful colleagues. Joining MTNA 2 years ago was one of the best things I have done to continue furthering my music education.

Bertie Botts Note Identification Game This summer I held a Hogwarts Music Camp for my students. We spent the camp learning about conducting with our wands, reviewing notes on the staff with Bertie Botts Beans, creating scales, learning music terms while casting “spells”, and so many other fun activities. My students informed me that this is their favorite camp that I’ve held so far.

In March I also returned to playing with the Utah Valley Symphony after taking a short maternity leave. We did a stage presentation of the musical “The Secret Garden”. Previous to the rehearsals I was familiar with a few songs from the show, but I fell in love with the entire show during the rehearsals and performances.

On top of all of those things I’ve continued to teach private violin and piano lessons, and am continually trying to improve my teaching. This fall I will be adding a lab time on to lessons. I will share my experience and some of my lab time plans as the weeks go on.

What have you been doing in the last few months?

I’m Back

A few months ago I ended up losing my entire website because of not backing my website up on my computer, and my webhost not renewing my hosting automatically like I had selected. Because of this I had to start all over. It was kind of nice to start from scratch and make some changes to my website that I had wanted to make for quite a while. The one down side was that I lost all of my blog post. I had so many ideas posted that I got very discouraged about starting again.

With a new school year started I’ve decided I’m finally ready to begin blogging again! I can’t promise it will be very often as I have a baby and a toddler, but I’m definitely going to try.

One of the things I want to bring back is my Techie Tuesdays. I am a strong proponent of Android Apps, and I have a number of more apps that I want to share with everyone!

So check back soon for more blog posts!
